Advocate of education, adoption to receive top Jackson College honor

JACKSON, MI – An alumna noted for her dedication to education and adoption is Jackson College's 2016 Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Award recipient.

Laura M. Stanton is being honored during the college's graduation at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall.

The Crockett award is given annually by Jackson College to honor distinguished alumni. It is named for a pioneering woman physician, who grew up in Jackson and attended what was then Jackson Junior College before finishing her education at the University of Michigan and Howard University.

Crockett became the first black woman to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. The award named for her is given to a person who has displayed a positive and personal involvement in the betterment of humankind and has ongoing contact with JC.

Stanton attended what then was Jackson Community College in the early 1970s, finishing her education at Eastern Michigan University, where she obtained a teaching degree.

Stanton spent 20 years as a Jackson Public Schools teacher and was a reading and instructional specialist before retiring in 1997.

In 1999, she and her husband David established the Stanton Foundation, which is dedicated to education and adoption.

Stanton helped coordinate the annual Wendy's Charity Classic golf tournament, which in 15 years has raised more than $2.5 million for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and Wendy's Wonderful Kids programs.

The Stanton Foundation also started a scholarship at Jackson College benefiting non-adopted foster care children continuing their education. This year's recipient is Justin Ealy, who's pursuing a career in social work.

The foundation also sponsors a Teacher of the Year Award in Hillsdale County.
